All of the “Dave Dawson” books were published twice, first by Crown Publishers in New York and subsequently by the Saalfield Publishing Company of Akron, Ohio, using the same plates but a slightly larger format. A sixteenth volume, Dave Dawson over Berlin was announced for 1946 but, with the end of the war, never published.

In the 1950s, a few books about young G.I.'s in the war did appear (see, for example, such books as Pashko, 1950; or White, 1956). During the following decade, several other publishers attempted to revive interest in flag-waving, patriotic, boy's books about World War II combat. Westminster Press, for instance, produced six sequential novels featuring Bob Dunbar and Gary Lunt, two young Alaskans fighting with the United States Navy in the Pacific (Shirreffs, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968). Though each sold respectively well, the volumes were more the exception than the rule and few other similar works appeared then or later. Indeed, since the end of the war, and increasingly so with every passing year, the majority of books for youth dealing with World War II have avoided combat altogether. When it is considered, the stress is not on the thrill of victory but on the agony and horror of war's bloodshed. See, for example, Olson, 1968, Bonham, 1968, or Mazer, 1979.

Because of the massive death and destruction featured in all of these volumes, none of Bowen's twenty-three children's novels ever made an appearance on an American Library Association list of recommended books for teen-aged readers. Their absence from the list, however, did nothing to erode sales and each volume sold out almost instantly after it reached bookstore shelves.
